Chiropractic

Definition

“A health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal manipulation or adjustment.”

A General Dictionary Definition of Chiropractic Approved by the Assembly of the World Federation of Chiropractic Auckland, May 19, 1999

How It Works

Chiropractic is a science and art of assessing an individual for restrictions which affect the spine and peripheral joints then mobilising those joints to improve range of motion and function, reduce pain, and eliminate other symptoms which may be associated with these restrictions (eg. headaches, organic dysfunction, etc).

Craniosacral Therapy refers to an extremely gentle system of treatment which interacts with subtle rhythms of the body associated with changes in fluid pressure and muscle tone throughout the body. It has the ability to affect every organ and tissue of the body but it is particularly helpful with problems associated with the skull, pelvis and autonomic nervous system (the part you don’t think about or have control over).

Myofascial Release refers to release of the muscles (“myo”) and connective tissue (“fascia”) of the body. Although we traditionally use massage techniques to achieve these aims, the most common response to heavy techniques is for the muscle to contract protectively. Myofascial Release is a very gentle style of treatment which applies subtle force to the tissues in a way that does not cause them to spasm protectively. In this way the therapist can perform stretching into the connective tissue of the muscle or other region of the body. Connective tissue is particularly important in chronic pain where it is often responsible for pressure on nerves and blood vessels – leading to unhealthy tissues, guarding, compensation and pain.

Conditions

The general range of conditions that chiropractors usually address includes:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Wry neck (torticollis)
  • Headaches
  • Migraine
  • Sports injuries
  • Peripheral joint pain

Craniosacral and Myofascial release practitioners also treat a range of other conditions which are not normally thought of in relation to chiropractors. These include:

1. Menstrual dysfunction/pain

  • Excessive pain or bleeding, clotting, excessive PMT
  •  Unexplained loss of periods
  • Irregular periods

2. Early onset menopause

  • Reduction of distressing symptoms of menopause (eg. hot flushes, skin problems, emotional instability)
  • Normal pattern of periods may return even if they have been absent for many months
  • Transition into real menopause is with much reduced symptoms and may occur years later

3. Pregnancy

  • Assisting with back, hip and pelvic pain often encountered during pregnancy
  • Reducing effects of hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy
  • Increasing the flexibility of the pelvis and equalising tone of pelvic floor muscles prior to birth

4. Incontinence

  • Reducing or eliminating urinary or faecal incontinence
  • Often experienced by women after childbirth or in later life, also by people who have had pelvic trauma, surgery or a fall on the coccyx (“tailbone”)
  • Assist patients to retrain muscles of the pelvic floor and sphincters

5. Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

  • Often seen in patients with a history of a fall on the coccyx
  • Often implicated in chronic low back pain and certain gait (walking) dysfunctions
  • Can be associated with painful sexual intercourse
  • Often seen after giving birth even if signs of incontinence are not apparent

6. Breathing and Rib Cage Dysfunction

  • Many people have inefficient patterns of breathing or rib cage restrictions which lead to tiredness; upper back, chest and neck muscle tenderness; headaches; anxiety; lowered immunity; postural problems
  • Treatment involves muscle and joint release therapies as well as re-training in correct breathing patterns

7. TMJ (Jaw) Dysfunction

  • Pain on chewing or speaking or yawning; locked jaw (open or closed)
  • Clenching and grinding leading to worn, cracked and broken teeth as well as destruction or fillings and bridges, etc.
  • With adequate treatment, exercise and lifestyle modification, and regular check-ups patients can completely control or eliminate their clenching and grinding
  • Jaw problems are strongly associated with postural problems and migraine headaches

8. Vision Problems

  • Patients who have experienced a sudden loss of visual acuity for no obvious reason often respond well to cranial (skull) and upper cervical (neck) work.
  • Some patients who have had long standing visual problems also respond well though this is less predictable.

Expect

The chiropractor will take a detailed history of your problem then perform an examination, after which they will discuss a diagnosis and plan of treatment. It may be necessary for the chiropractor to order x-rays or refer you to another practitioner for further investigation.

Treatment may involve massage, muscle release, stretching, spinal manipulation, exercise and lifestyle instruction. If the chiropractor is using gentler techniques such as Craniosacral Therapy or Myofascial Release they will use very gentle contacts to communicate with your nervous system and affect tissues.
