Osteoporosis

Standard Definition

Commonly known as ‘brittle bones’, osteoporosis is a condition involving the loss of bone mass, which increases the risk of bone fracture, especially in the hip, spine and wrist. It is common in postmenopausal women due to the loss of protective oestrogen, however many dietary and lifestyle factors play a role in the risk of developing this disease.

Underlying Disruption in Function

Bone metabolism is a dynamic process of absorption and release of bone minerals that occurs throughout our lives. Trace minerals other than calcium are needed for the make up of the bone matrix and strength. Hormonal factors and kidney function are also essential for the proper maintenance of the bone. Many factors in our diet and lifestyle affect bone mineral status including those that prevent absorption and encourage loss (eg. Caffeine). Prevention of bone loss through the reduction or elimination of the risk factors should begin as early as possible for best results.
