Insomnia is defined as the inability to fall asleep or maintain sleep throughout the night. Insomnia can be a temporary, occasional, or chronic problem and may contribute to poor physical, mental and emotional daily function.

 
 
Underlying Disruption in Function

Sleep is essential for our wellbeing. It allows for restoration of mental processes, rest of our vital organs, mobilisation of our immune system and repair of tissues. Sleep requires adequate levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Carbohydrates at the evening meal can increase serotonin levels, aiding sleep. Inadequate sleep can contribute to significant social problems including depression and can prevent the body from healing during times of illness or stress. Conversely, insomnia may be a result of depression, grief or stress, and simply compound the problem. Sleeping medications may help temporarily, however they may disrupt the important REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, resulting in waking feeling un-rested.
