Infertility (Female)

Standard Definition

Infertility is defined as the failure to become pregnant after a year of trying to conceive. The specific causes of infertility should always be determined in consultation with your healthcare practitioner and specialists before considering treatment options. Sometimes a diagnosis of ‘unexplained infertility’ is given – this is unexplained in terms of conventional medicine, but may have many possible causes as viewed by integrative, naturopathic or traditional Chinese medicine.

Data pooled from around the world indicates that 50% of healthy couples will conceive in 3 months, approximately 75% will have conceived by 6 months and 85% by 12 months. In general terms, 1 in 7 couples are infertile if the woman is 30-34 years old, 1 in 5 when she is 35-40 years and 1 in 4 when she is 40-44 years.

Underlying Disruption in Function

Infertility may be caused by numerous factors as diverse as hormone imbalances through to toxic chemical exposure. Fertility must be considered as a factor of the whole woman’s health and wellbeing, and as such any imbalance or ill health can result in an environment that is not conducive to a pregnancy. It is important to be aware that fertility problems involve the male partner – see Infertility (Male).
