Fibroids

Standard Definition

Fibroids, also known as uterine leiomyomas, are fibrous and non-cancerous tumours of the uterus. They affect 20 - 25% of women over the age of 35 and vary greatly in size, number and position. They may or may not cause problems, depending on these factors and should be monitored on a regular basis.

Underlying Disruption in Function

The growth of fibroids is dependent on the presence of oestrogen (they usually shrink after menopause). Reducing the 'relative oestrogen excess' found in these women (also a factor in endometriosis, breast lumps and other female problems) is key to treatment. Ensuring proper oestrogen to progesterone balance, enhancing oestrogen elimination and reducing the intake of synthetic oestrogens are primary aims. It has also been shown that high sugar intake and insulin-growth factors act to stimulate fibroid growth.
