Well known to the ancients, rosemary has a reputation for improving memory and maintaining youth. It is a frequently used culinary herb, however was traditionally used for serious circulatory ailments and infections.

Rosemary has antibacterial and antifungal activity, and potent antioxidant effects. Rosemary also has been shown to inhibit cancer development by increasing detoxification of carcinogens through the liver. It also protects the liver from toxic damage and encourages the flow of bile from the gall bladder. The oil and several of its active principles produce anti-spasmodic effects in smooth muscle (gallbladder, small intestines and blood vessels).

  • Digestive disorders - indigestion, flatulence, colic, poor appetite, poor liver function, gallbladder disorders
  • Headache, migraine

Common dosage range

Generally recommended doses are equivalent to 2 to 4 g three times per day.
Essential oil - 2 to 4 drops in 1 tablespoon of base oil.

 
 
Cautions, Contraindications and Side Effects

  • Rosemary is generally regarded as safe and well tolerated, however excessive intake can cause spasm, vomiting, diarrhoea, uterine bleeding, kidney irritation, and in some cases, coma.
  • Rosemary should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in children.
  • Rosemary oil is unsafe for internal consumption since it can irritate the stomach, intestines, and kidneys. The oil may cause rash and dermatitis in hypersensitive individuals, and photosensitivity has been reported. Excessive use of rosemary oil may increase blood pressure or trigger epileptic fits in susceptible individuals.
