Green tea

Botanical name

Camellia sinensis

Actions

Green tea is unfermented, while black tea is fermented. Green tea is particularly rich in substances called polyphenols which have strong antioxidant and anticancer activities. Green tea polyphenols (GTP) surpass vitamins C and E in their antioxidant protective properties.

Green tea is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to promote digestion, counter flatulence, stimulate mental function, improve eyesight, and regulate body temperature. It is also thought to strengthen the arteries, reduce excess fats, clear phlegm, and neutralise poisons. The tannins in green tea have antidiarrhoea activity. The longer tea leaves are brewed, the greater the tannin content.

Major actions supported by research are:

  • Antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal
  • Prevention of atherosclerosis, enhanced blood flow to the heart, reduction of cholesterol and triglycerides (and increasing HDL and lowering LDL cholesterol), prevention of platelet aggregation (blood clotting)
  • Antioxidant, free radical scavenging
  • Anticancer (strongest evidence for gastrointestinal tract, lung, skin, prostate and breast cancer), also helps prevent side-effects of cancer treatment
  • Relaxing effects on the muscles of the bronchi (airways)
  • Liver protective

Conditions commonly used for
  • Cancer prevention, cancer treatment support
  • Asthma
  • Digestive - diarrhoea, bacterial dysentery, liver disease such as chronic hepatitis or fatty liver
  • Prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, high blood fats, tendency to blood clots
  • As part of an antioxidant health regime

Common dosage range

One to 3 cups of low caffeine or decaffeinated green tea per day is a standard recommendation.

Standardised green tea extracts in forms of tablets or capsules usually provide a dosage of polyphenols at 300 to 400 mg per day.

Cautions, Contraindications and Side Effects

  • Quantities of greater than 5 cups of tea consumed as a beverage (equivalent to more than 300 mg caffeine taken daily) are considered overdoses. Intake above this level can produce side effects of caffeine excess, such as restlessness, tremor, excitability, irritability, insomnia and anxiety.
  • Individuals who have sensitive stomachs should limit their intake of green tea. The chlorogenic acid and tannins in tea can cause hyperacidity, gastric irritation, reduced appetite, reduced iron absorption and diarrhoea.
  • Pregnant women should limit their caffeine. Nursing mothers who drink tea put their infants at risk for sleep disorders.
  • Drinking large amounts of green tea may decrease the effectiveness of warfarin.
