Dandelion leaf

Botanical name

Taraxacum officinale

Actions

Native to Europe, dandelion is now widespread throughout the world as a common weed. The leaves are often consumed as a nutritious salad green during spring and summer, aiding spring cleansing through the liver. Dandelion leaves contain the highest vitamin A content of all greens and very high levels of potassium.

Dandelion leaves are used predominantly in treatments for liver and digestive disorders and fluid retention (oedema) since they encourage the flow of bile and digestive enzymes, and stimulate fluid loss through the kidneys. The dandelion root is a much stronger liver herb (see separate monograph for details)

Conditions commonly used for
  • Fluid retention (oedema) associated with premenstrual syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, high blood pressure, post surgery, stubborn weight loss
  • Kidney support - for the prevention and treatment of kidney stones and gout
  • As a detoxifying herb for various conditions, including gallbladder disease, liver and skin disease

Common dosage range

Dried leaf infusion - 2 teaspoons infused for 10 - 15 minutes in 1 cup of boiling water, taken up to 3 times per day.
