Cranberry

Botanical name

Vaccinium macrocarpon

Actions

Cranberries are closely related to bilberry, both of which are edible fruits and medicines. In the 17th century, cranberries were used to treat stomach complaints, diarrhoea, liver and gallbladder disorders, blood conditions, appetite loss, scurvy, and cancer.

Early this century it was discovered that cranberries were an effective herbal treatment for recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Cranberry was found to be anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and uniquely anti-adherance (prevents the adherance of bacteria to the urinary tract mucosa).
